Chris Isaak

 Live Concert

I recently had the pleasure of attending a live performance of Chris Isaak in Lewiston, New York on August 4, 2009. A few friends reluctantly accompanied me as they knew how much I wanted to attend. Very quickly though I heard from both of my friends, one on each side of me, how glad they were that I had not let them miss the concert of their lives. My one friend told me that she was going home and ordering every album he ever made. I had always been disappointed that I was never privileged enough to see Elvis Presley perform live. I left Chris Isaak’s concert feeling like I had seen a concert equal to the quality of such a concert. I spoke just those words to my friends as we exited the park. I heard everyone around me exclaiming about how impressed they were with the concert and Chris’s performance.

Bio

The multi-talented multi-dimensional singer actor Chris Joseph Isaak was born on June 26, 1956 in Stockton, California. His mother states that she noticed him becoming affected by sad country songs as early as eight months of age. Chris grew up in a blue-collar family. His father was a forklift operator. His mother, an Italian American, was a potato chip factory worker. Chris has two older brothers, Nick and Jeff.He frequented second-hand stores with him mom to scour for records, which enabled him to continue his musical education. This is where he discovered the power of rock ‘n’ roll. He borrowed his brother’s guitar when he was a teenager and taught himself to play and write music. Chris enjoyed Hank Williams and Elvis Presley. One has to only hear him play and sing to hear the definite influence; although, he clearly has developed his own sound.

Chris attended Woodrow Wilson Elementary School from 1961 to 1970. He attended Daniel Webster Junior High School. He also attended Stagg High school where he was elected president of the student body. He presently resides in San Francisco. He has two brothers named Jeff and Nick. His parents names are Joe and Dorothy. Chris attended the University of the Pacific and majored in English and communications. He is a two time Grammy award nominee. Chris enjoys boxing and has even broken his nose six times while trying to make it as a boxer. Personally, after hearing him perform live in Lewiston, New York on August 4, 2009, I must say that I am glad that he did not make it as a boxer. To have seen him come out in flashy costumes on stage it is difficult to picture him as a boxer.

In his late teens, Chris attended college and spent a lot of his time training at the boxing gym and fought as a light heavyweight. At one point he became an exchange student in Japan and became a working tour guide. It was in Kyoto and Tokyo Japan where he began to consider a career in music after he earned a part as a movie extra. Chris graduated from college with a bachelor’s degree and moved to San Francisco.

Chris's main guitar is a one of a kind white Gibson. It is a one-off version of a 6120, a kind of a Chet Atkins thing. They made it, they gave it to him and he liked it so much he has been playing it ever since. Chris does not even believe that they ever manufactured the guitar that he uses. He sometimes uses a Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar, which he says he uses for songwriting.

Chris began as a solo act, but later, in the 1980’s he formed a group called the Silvertone. It took hard work and perseverance as the band played the Bay Area bar and local clubs trying to make a name for themselves. Erik Jacobsen, a producer best known for Lovin’ Spoonful, became interested in Chris Isaak and his band and signed the group in a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records. The album, Silvertone, was released in 1985 and quickly earned raves from artists such as John Pogerty. The album became a major hit in various international markets. Chris’s band plays with him yet today. The list includes: Kenny Dale Johnson as his drummer, Rowland Salley his bassist.

Chris has put out a number of albums: Silvertone 1985, Chris Isaak 1987, Heart Shaped World 1989, San Francisco Days 1993, Forever Blue 1995, Baja Sessions 1996, Speak of the Devil 1998, Always Got Tonight 2002, Chris Isaak Christmas 2004, Best of Chris Isaak 2006 and Mr. Lucky 2009. His second album became a hit in the United States and eventually overseas. Chris plays live around the globe and makes him a star throughout the world. He has established himself as a crowd pleasing live performer wherever he goes.

It was in 1987 that Chris got to meet one of his idols, Roy Orbison. Chris was extremely honored when Orbison invited Chris to be his opening act on tour. Chris told Orbison that he was unsure if the music that he wrote were hits. Orbison assured him that his songs were hits, but he just did not know it yet. Chris will tell you yet today that is just what he needed to hear. He shares in his live performances that Orbison was one of the nicest people he ever met.

In 1988, Chris ventured out to try his chance at acting. He played a small role of a clown in Johnathan Demme’s comedy, Married to the Mob that starred Michelle Pfeifer and Matthew Modine. Later Chris played more substantial roles.

Chris continued his acting career and in 2004 he appeared in A Dirty Shame with Tracy Ullman and Johnny Knoxville.

Music, however, continues to be Chris's passion. In 2004 Chris released the album, Chris Isaak Christmas. He released his Best of Chris Isaak album in 2006, which was quickly acclaimed and he began a busy touring season.

Finally, in 2009, Chris appeared in The Informers, a drama by Bret Easton Ellis, which will be released later this year. The movie will star Bill Bob Thorton, Kim Basinger, Mickey Rourke and Winona Ryder. He is presently a host of The Chris Isaak Hour, which will be aired on the BIO channel. His latest album released this year entitled Mr. Lucky has people rushing to local media centers to listen to and purchase his music. One may only wonder what the multi-talented musician actor host boxer will be doing next.

By the way, ladies, he is still single based on this interview transcript: http://www.abc.net.au/tv/enoughrope/transcripts/s1651983.htm#transcriptBody
